Bitwise’s CIO Cautions Against Early Predictions for BTC Highs and ETF Flows
Asset management firm Bitwise recently evaluated its ambitious forecasts made in December, as highlighted in a memo by its Chief Investment Officer, Matt Hougan. With the first half of 2025 now completed, only two of those predictions have materialized, though the firm expresses optimism that the latter half of the year could see significant developments.
Bitcoin’s Future Remains Uncertain
The central prediction concerning Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana reaching new all-time highs, particularly Bitcoin surpassing $200,000, remains unconfirmed. Although Bitcoin achieved a record high of nearly $112,000 in May, its current trading price hovers below $108,000 as of July 4. In contrast, both Ethereum and Solana have experienced declines since the start of the year; Ethereum is priced at $2,500—down approximately 24% year-to-date and nearly 49% lower than its peak in 2021—while Solana is trading at $146, reflecting a 25% decrease since January 1 and about 50% below its all-time high. Despite these figures, Hougan noted prevailing strong trends that could influence a turnaround in the second half of 2025. He pointed out a significant imbalance between Bitcoin’s supply and demand, stating, “So far this year, the bitcoin network has produced around 80,000 BTC, while ETFs and corporates have gobbled up more than 300,000 BTC.” He anticipates that this demand will eventually outstrip available supply, leading to a potential price surge.
Optimism for Bitcoin’s Second Half Performance
Hougan is optimistic that the latter part of the year could be particularly robust for Bitcoin, with a possibility of its price reaching $200,000 before the year’s end. He explained that a correlation exists between price increases and enhanced inflows into the market, suggesting that rising prices tend to attract greater investment. Bitwise’s predictions highlight the dynamic nature of the crypto market, where regulatory developments and growing institutional interest are expected to shape its future trajectory.
Speculations on ETF Flows and Coinbase’s Market Position
Another prediction from Bitwise that remains uncertain is the expectation that spot Bitcoin ETFs will attract more investment in 2025 compared to 2024. Currently, ETFs have accumulated around $13 billion, significantly lower than the $35 billion seen last year. However, Bitwise anticipates a shift in this trend. Hougan pointed out that recent approvals of Bitcoin ETFs by major national account platforms, including Wells Fargo, signify a new wave of demand. As financial advisors begin to invest, he expects ETF inflows to increase substantially.
Market Dynamics Affecting Coinbase’s Valuation
Bitwise’s expectation that Coinbase would surpass Charles Schwab in market valuation appears increasingly unlikely, as noted in the memo. Currently, Schwab’s market capitalization stands at approximately $166 billion, compared to Coinbase’s $90.6 billion. Hougan attributes this gap not to Coinbase’s underperformance, but rather to the traditional finance sector experiencing a favorable trend. He remarked that while Coinbase’s stock has risen by 43% this year, it hasn’t been enough to close the valuation gap with Schwab. “I think investors haven’t fully grasped that we’re in the midst of a full-scale revolution in how finance works,” he commented, referring to the shift from conventional banking methods to digital assets like stablecoins and tokenized stocks. He expressed confidence in Coinbase’s potential for growth as awareness of these changes increases. In May, Coinbase made history by becoming the first crypto-native company to join the S&P 500, quickly becoming one of the top performers in the index, despite facing scrutiny over a recent data breach.
Circle’s IPO Highlights the Growing Crypto Landscape
In a notable event for the U.S. crypto sector, Circle, the issuer of the second-largest stablecoin, went public last month, raising over $1 billion in a highly publicized IPO while leaving an additional $1.7 billion unclaimed. This move underscores the ongoing evolution and expansion of the cryptocurrency market, as more companies seek to capitalize on the burgeoning interest in digital finance.
